Like many of 558’s supporters, I have had no involvement with aviation other than occasional attendance at air shows. One of these was with my parents which I believe must have been Halfpenny Green airfield near Wolverhampton in the 1960’s.
I remember there being an air race, but also a very big and noisy aeroplane which made a big impression on a young lad. This must have been the Vulcan. Alas, I gave it very little thought thereafter until I discovered the XH558 story in about 2007 as part of a wider interest in the history of industry and technology.
I joined the 558 Club and later began to make a small but regular contribution to the cause. Since then I have visited one or two shows each season and the sight of XH558 is always both exhilarating and emotional.
