On my return from RAF Labuan, I was posted to the administration staff of Bomber Command Development Unit (BCDU) stationed at RAF Finningley in a collection of wooden huts, and co-incidentally just 200 yards to the north of Hangar 3 where ‘558’ now resides!

We were responsible for updating the very latest Electronic Countermeasures (ECMs) for the V force and had a B2 Vulcan at our disposal to assist in flight evaluation. So successful was one trial that our CO (Squadron Leader Tate) actually disappeared from radar tracking, and only emerged from cover when he rang base from Goose Bay in Labrador.

We were also responsible for developing the retarded bomb techniques for low level delivery using a spinning tail fin (that made very useful ashtrays) and small parachutes to prevent tails being blown off the aircraft!
