In the mid-60’s I was an Air Radio/Radar Engineer (dual trade – quite a new thing) at RAF Scampton, working mainly in the ‘Gym Palace’ – the 2nd line servicing bay. If an Exercise was called, we ‘softies’ often had to go out on the line and act as security detail to ensure security of the Vulcans in exercise conditions.
The main memory I have is of one session where the maintenance crew had to run all engines up to full power after an engine change. The sheer noise (even with ear defenders) and vibration from the 4 engines was amazing – it literally vibrated your whole chest, so you could hardly breathe! An incredible experience – one I will never forget!
