I was stationed at RAF Coningsby when the Vulcan was withdrawn from service and was lucky enough to see the farewell flypast tour of Lincolnshire airfields.
There were dozens of us standing on the apron behind the control tower when not one, not two, but three of these graceful old ladies flew over our heads at about 100′ (should have been four but one was u/s).
The racket from the six Rolls Royce Olympus engines was indescribable, and no-one could hear for about two days afterwards (tricky as we were the ATC staff!).
I won’t ever forget it as long as I live, and feel highly privileged to have witnessed such an amazing event.
