August 1977, on a bustering hot summers day, a good friend and I eagerly cycled the 8 miles from Stourbridge to Halfpenny Green Airfield (Bobbington) Air show. We stopped by the airfield Southside 3-strand wire fence to catch our breath and plan our entrance.

As we stood on the scorched grass verge to peer into the airfield, the sun was momentarily blotted out by the huge delta form of a Vulcan, which had approached silently from behind us, at high speed and about 250 ft., to begin its thrilling display. This exhilarating sensory overload was utterly fantastic!

From that moment I knew I would join the RAF.
