My son, Jake, has always loved the Lancaster bomber but 5 years ago was drawn into the world of the Vulcan too. He’d read anything he could get his hands on about the Falkland years and Martin Withers.

For his 21st Birthday I surprised him with a visit to see XH558 in her hanger at Doncaster. I think the tour guide was surprised at how much he knew about the aircraft and the Vulcan campaigns. As an additional surprise, I commissioned a Vulcan Birthday cake to be made for him – all of which was completely edible.

In 2014 we went to see her fly at RAF Waddington Air Show which was a fantastic day and I was able to take a video of her being pulled out to the runway whilst we stood under her wing. Jake has also visited the static Vulcan at East Midlands Airport and was thrilled to be able to sit in it.

We will never forget the Vulcan howl and will be saddened when she finally retires. Long live XH558 wherever her journey takes her next.
