My memory is of a Wednesday sports afternoon at RAF Wilmslow (About 1 mile west of AVRO’s factory.) We suddenly heard a tremendous engine roar and this Vulcan came just over the top of our Hangar and over us. It seemed to cover the whole field
We looked around in amazement and realised we were all crouching down on the grass! A few minutes later we saw it returning, more to the west and relatively higher, but still fairly low, and watching as it lowered its wheels – and saw – in horror – one of its twin wheel ‘bogies’ fall off and drop seemingly slowly out of our sight.
We all stopped playing, waiting for the noise of the plane crashing! but he must have landed it ok, thank goodness.
I am unsure of the actual date, but it must have been between late summer 1953 and early spring 1954.
