In late 1955 I was carrying out square-bashing at RAF Wilmslow, Cheshire at the commencement of National Service. This recruit Training Centre was just a few miles from Woodford where the Vulcans were assembled.

Part of the training programme was for recruits to be marched to Woodford to see this work in process.

My most vivid recollection, however, was that as Vulcans flew over the training base on test flights all outdoor training was brought to a halt by the instructors to allow us to gaze upwards at the awe inspiring sight which often threw huge shadows across the parade ground.
