The Saturday in the middle of September was once known as ‘Battle of Britain Day.’
Various RAF stations were open to the public with displays and flypast etc. Saturday 17th September 1960 was such a day and also my wedding. As my husband and I came out of the tiny village church, there was an earth shaking roar and the three V Bombers led by the Vulcan, flew low, directly overhead, heading for RAF middle Wallop, nearby.
We were thrilled of course, but my grandmother was convinced it had been laid on for us especially by Air Ministry!
As we were only a humble flying officer and pilot officer, we couldn’t convince her that it was most unlikely!
