In the autumn 1958, XH497 took off from RAF Scampton leaving its nose wheel on the ground. After burning off fuel, it returned via RAF Waddington where two crew bailed out.

The navigator was killed. I was guard of honour at his funeral at Scampton Church.

The aircraft landed at Scampton with little damage. The skipper was Flt Lt Smeaton. I was in the tower relaying advice from Woodford to controller SATCO Sqd Ldr Holloway.

XH497 was repaired and soon back in service. The aircraft had a similar accident at Scampton 03/071968. This time it was not repaired and sold as scrap.
