I was at the Royal International Air Tattoo in 1991 when XH558 was the display aircraft for the RAF Vulcan Memorial Flight. I was seated in the FIAT grandstand when a couple of American aircrew sat down in front of me just as XH558 was lining up for take of.
She wound up her engines to full power with the well known howl and charged down the runway and rotated directly in line with the FIAT grandstand and lifted away into a wingover. I overheard one of the Americans say
‘Gee! she doesn’t so much take off as scare the runway out from underneath.’
That overheard comment was so accurate and succinct that it has stayed with me ever since.
