Being born in the early 1960s, I have clear and happy memories of watching displays of the Avro Vulcans and de Havilland Victors at Woodford air shows as a teenager.

My late father Brian would take a car load of us and we’d all sit on the roof in the baking June sunshine.

My father, of course, knew the real function of these jets was to maintain NATO’s position in the cold war standoff; all we cared about was the noise!
