Limited Edition – Dambusters Operation Chastise 80th Anniversary Coin
Limited to 617 pieces

On the night of 16-17 May 1943, Wing Commander Guy Gibson led 617 Squadron of the Royal Air Force on an audacious bombing raid to destroy three dams – Mohne, Eder, Sorpe – in the Ruhr valley, the industrial heartland of Germany. The mission was codenamed Operation Chastise.

The dams were fiercely protected. Torpedo nets in the water stopped underwater attacks and anti-aircraft guns defended them against enemy bombers. But 617 Squadron had the secret weapon: the ‘bouncing bomb’.

This Limited Edition Dambusters Operation Chastise 80th Anniversary Coin commemorates the legendary Dambusters raids.

  • On the obverse of the coin is the the planform of the Avro Lancaster on a lucent black enamel background along with text that glows in the dark.
  • The reverse of the coin displays the routes flown by RAF Scampton, 617 Sqn, aircraft and the three dams that were bombed.

The coin measures 50mm (just slightly under 2 inches) in diameter. The Limited Edition coin is supplied in a display box which is debossed with the planform of the Lancaster and ‘Operation Chastise’ text.
