150 (Oxford) Sqn Air Cadets
Following on from the activities of last year, 150 (Oxford) Sqn Air Cadets attended Stratford Stores for a work day on Saturday 20th January to continue with their dismantling of one of our AVON 109 engines.
They were brave souls as it was freezing cold, we had a lack of water, yes pipes frozen, and there was no heating in the warehouse workshop. But despite all that they had a great time as they always do when they turn up here.
It has been described as adventure training indoors as we don’t have a manual so a lot of effort goes into working out just how to take things apart, it is amazing how one small bolt can hold everything up.
This will be the last visit for a while as Flying Officer David McCulloch their supervising officer has had a hip replacement and we wish him well with his recuperation and look forward to welcoming him back and the Cadets as there is still plenty for them to do.
1017 (Malvern) Sqn Air Cadets
On Thursday 25th January we took the mobile cinema to 1017 (Malvern) Sqn Air Cadets Film HQ for a presentation of the Attack on Sorpe Dam. This was arranged following an invitation by the Squadron’s Padre, the Reverend Gary Crellin. Gary has been a long-time supporter of AVRO Vulcan XH558 and is a regular at our Open Days.
The film, and the follow-on discussion, was well received by the 25 or so Cadets and also by Gary since this was the first event undertaken with him in charge within the Pastoral Care umbrella of the Air Cadets.
We know the Cadets learnt a lot and understood that whilst there are winners and losers in war there is a very blurred line. We also learnt more about the way the Cadets perceive conflict and the ethics involved. A great evening enjoyed by all.
