Last week the VTST team exhibited at the annual Get Up To Speed Event with STEM, hosted at the Magna Science Adventure Centre in Rotherham it attracted in excess of 5,000 young people from across the South Yorkshire Region. The event showcases the engineering and manufacturing capabilities of the region, driven by local and national employers, headline sponsors included AESSEAL(UK) CBE+, Sheffield Forgemasters, Stream7, The Ironmongers Company. It is a highly interactive event which highlights the breadth and diversity of the sector and introduces future technologies where jobs of tomorrow will be created. It is the opportunity to link the curriculum to real life experiences whilst exploring the diverse range of opportunities and pathways available to young people in a fun and interactive way.
VTST were well represented by our knowledgeable volunteers Carolyn, Nikki and Pete whose knowledge and enthusiasm are a constant source of inspiration for young people. Building on our strong relationship with Doncaster UTC we had students in attendance on the stand demonstrating aerodynamics in a wind tunnel and their workshop exploring different parachute materials and the affect it had on the drag of an aircraft, this was a co-created workshop between VTST and the UTC. This interactive display and workshop captivated students sparking curiosity and numerous questions whilst fostering a love of learning and shaping their futures.
As we reflect on the event, we remind ourselves of the importance of XH558 and the work we do in embracing innovation, fostering creativity and supporting diversity in STEM fields. The challenges we currently face as a global community require bold ideas and collaborative efforts all qualities which were demonstrated with the design and build of the Iconic Avro Vulcan but also in the vision and carrying out the successful restoration and return to flight of XH558.
